When you meet Dwight Johnson, you feel as if you just met your new best friend.
"I feel like I have a lot of friends on campus," said Johnson. "I was thinking about that the other day. I feel like I am acquainted with a lot of people."
A sophomore from Amory, Johnson picked Millsaps College in part because of the opportunity to make new friends and the overall Millsaps experience.
"It's not just the students," he said. "For me it is the community size, class size, college size, and the one-on-one time I get with my professors. Getting to know the professors and getting them to know me has been the greatest thing about Millsaps. I have gotten close with all of my professors."
The connection that Johnson has with his professors has proven invaluable. As a music major, Johnson admits that he is headed down the road less taken.
"I feel like once I am in a class I am all about trying to get to know more about what I'm learning. Music classes aren't always easy. I'm not perfect, so I always want to get to know my professors, and they can offer me one-on-one help."
Along with playing the piano and trombone, and taking private voice lessons with Dr. Cheryl Coker, Johnson sings with the tenors in the Millsaps Singers and the Chamber Singers.
Many people that meet Johnson assume he plays football.
"A lot of people think that I play football because of my build," he said. "I have always stuck with basketball. Every day somebody is asking me 'Hey man, how's football?' Its not a problem; I can understand the confusion."
Johnson's love of basketball drives him to many different arenas.
"I am really into intramural basketball!" he said. "I am getting together a team right now. I loved playing last year. Millsaps has a great intramural program."
Basketball also led Johnson to working with a program at Murrah High School called "Books and Basketball."
"We tutor seventh through twelfth graders on Wednesdays for about an hour and a half," he said. "We have a basketball team that I coach. It is something for kids to do other than be in the streets. It gives them something to do to help them become productive citizens in the future."
It's enthusiasm like this that earned Johnson "Outstanding Freshman of the Year."
Millsaps is a great environment for students making the transition from high school to college, he said.
"It has a great size for what it offers. There are opportunities for internships. There are great eating-places in the Fondren area, and this is such a great setting for people who want to be in a college setting without the 500 million square foot campus. Millsaps was absolutely the right choice for me."
