Millsaps' AACSB-accredited program in accounting enhances focused study in the discipline with outstanding opportunities both for internships with public accounting and private sector firms right in Jackson and for independent research projects. The accounting residency program allows selected seniors to work full time for a Big 5, regional, or local accounting firm. A Millsaps College Master in Accountancy can be earned with just one additional year of study.

Professional Certification

All accounting students are encouraged to obtain professional certification. The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate is the most widely recognized certification available to accountants. The CPA designation indicates achievement of broad-based knowledge, skills and abilities and a commitment to ethical behavior. Other certifications available to accounting students include the Certified Management Accountant and the Certified Internal Auditor.

Graduate Study at Millsaps

Many states, including Mississippi, currently require candidates for the CPA examination to have a minimum of 150 semester hours of college course work, with many states specifying a minimum number of hours of accounting courses. Consequently, motivated accounting students are encouraged to consider pursuing a Masters of Accountancy degree at Millsaps. This program allows students to gain additional exposure to accounting theory and practice while meeting the minimum requirement for the CPA examination. The program generally requires one additional year of study beyond the BBA for students who have majored in accounting and wish to complete the educational requirements to take the CPA examination.

Internships

The Jackson location provides outstanding opportunities for internships, part-time employment and independent research. Many junior and senior students obtain part-time internships with public accounting and private sector firms. Other students have been involved in research studies involving accounting, legal practices, technology, etc.
