The ancient past comes alive at
Millsaps, where the study of the literature, art, history, archaeology,
philosophy, religion and language of ancient Greece and Rome brilliantly
illuminates our understanding of contemporary culture. Through our
off-campus programs, you can earn course credit exploring Greece
or Rome during spring break or a summer, semester or year abroad.
A Millsaps degree in classics hones the intellectual skills you'll
need for further study and careers in medicine, anthropology, theology,
law and nearly every field in the humanities.
Classical Studies will help
you:
- Achieve academic excellence: Our graduates
have won Fulbrights and numerous other fellowships and awards
for graduate study.
- Prepare for life in the global community:
In Classical Studies, you'll explore how the conflicts of the
past echo in the present. Study ancient models of understanding
the tensions between differing ethnic groups, religious traditions,
social classes and genders.
- Study with the best: We offer a classical
education in an intimate setting where you'll have ready access
to resources and to an award winning faculty whose knowledge
and expertise spans many disciplines in not only the ancient,
but also the medieval and modern worlds.
- Investigate your heritage directly: We'll
give you the tools to study ancient Greek, Latin and Sanskrit
texts in the languages in which they were written. Why read
a translation of the New Testament, Plato or Vergil, when you
can read the original and come to your own interpretation and
meaning of these works?
Study Abroad Opportunities
The short term:
- Greek Legacy Field Studies: This spring
break trip introduces you to the art, archeology and culture
of ancient Greece and includes visits to Athens, Cape Sounion,
Corinth, Nauphlion, Olympia, and Delphi.
- Roman Legacy Field Studies: This spring
break trip introduces you to the art, archeology and culture
of ancient Rome. We explore the fabulous sites and museums of
two regions of Italy: Sorrento and Rome.
Ready for more? The long term:
- College Year in Athens (CYA): CYA offers
summer, semester, and year-long programs in Athens, Greece with
numerous trips throughout mainland Greece, Crete and the Aegean
Sea, as well as courses taught on site or in Greek museums.
- Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies
in Rome (ICCS Rome) As an ICCS member, our department can send
students for semester study at the Centro in Rome which offers
courses, in Latin, Roman archaeology, history, Greek, Italian
and art history. From this central campus, ICCS students visit
archaeological sites and museums in Rome and take field trips
and tours of Campania and Sicily.
- Millsaps Institute for Interdisciplinary
Archaeology Research (MIIAR): The Classical Studies
department is a founding member of MIIAR which offers students
opportunities for active field study and research at archaeological
sites around the world including Greece, Albania, and Italy.
Students can learn the basics of the archaeological method during
the summer with Millsaps faculty in the Blue Ridge Mountains
of West Virginia.
Facilities and Resources
- The department occupies the second floor
of John Stone Hall, a charming two-story building originally
the home of the college's early presidents. Located on the south
green, John Stone is also home to the Millsaps College Writing
Program.
- The Swearingen Collection of Greek and Roman
coins was a gift of Crawford Enochs and Bethany Swearingen,
daughters of the first classics professor at Millsaps, Dr. George
Swearingen.
Life After Millsaps
Upon graduation, our alumni flourish
within and beyond the field of classical studies. The skills they
acquired during their undergraduate careers prepared them well for
a marvelous variety of challenging opportunities.
For example:
- Following graduation, Jason Reddoch spent
the summer at the prestigious American School for Classical
Studies in Athens, Greece. Then he used the linguistic abilities
which he had gained in his classical studies and went to China
to teach English for a year. He has just been awarded a fellowship
to study Classics at the University of Cincinnati.
- Our Classical Studies majors also become
doctors. Ellen Parker, who spent her junior year abroad in Greece,
attended Vanderbilt's Medical School and is now a radiologist.
Other majors are now physical therapists, veterinarians and
family practice doctors.
