Every Millsaps student who obtains teacher licensure
learns how:
- To communicate effectively
- To manage diverse groups of people
- To motivate others to maximize their learning potential
- To assess teaching and learning effectiveness
- To appreciate the unique qualities of others
- To develop increased self-confidence and leadership skills
Advantages of studying education at Millsaps:
- All licensure programs are accredited by
the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education
(NCATE). The program allows undergraduates to explore
teaching as a career option and to become fully prepared and
licensed to teach successfully at the elementary or the secondary
level within the regular framework of a Millsaps BA or BS degree.
Participants can major in an academic subject and earn Secondary
and/or Middle School Licensure in Art, Biology, Chemistry, General
Science, English, Drama (Performing Arts), Social Studies, Mathematics,
Music Education Instrumental, Music Education Vocal, Physics,
Psychology, Sciences, Theatre, and world languages including
French, Latin, Spanish, and German. Students may major
in Elementary Education and receive licensure at the elementary
school level. Students may also Minor in Education. Supplemental
Licensure is available in Mild/Moderate Disability and Gifted.
- Students may minor in Education as preparation for
teaching in independent or private schools. If students decide
late in their college career that traditional licensure would
provide additional flexibility and options, they may student
teach at a reduced tuition the year after graduation.
- Program participants may elect to teach
abroad during their student teaching semester, or take
other courses towards their majors or areas of concentration
abroad. A variety of options are available including programs
in Germany, Canada, the Yucatan, South America, and Department
of Defense schools.
- Students may opt to become Lilly Service
Interns or Lilly Fellows, programs designed to encourage
exploration into the relationship between work, meaning, and
service to others. Both the Service Interns and the Fellows
programs, when successfully completed, appear on students' permanent
transcript. Stipends are available.
- Scholarship opportunities are frequently
available for students seeking traditional teacher licensure
and those willing to teach in high needs areas after graduation.
- Student research is guided through
review and active participation in models of action research,
directly supported by faculty field research, course work, and
conferences.
- The combination of our experienced-based program with nationally
recognized academic majors creates highly competitive graduates
with teaching credentials. The teacher preparation program provides
placement services to Millsaps students and alumni seeking teaching
positions in elementary and secondary schools, both public and
private.
- Direct, hands-on teaching and learning
opportunities are integrated throughout the licensure
process. The strength of the Millsaps teacher preparation program
is its field-based approach to professional development.
- The Millsaps College Principals' Institute,
a component of the department, brings distinguished national
scholars and speakers to campus, along with other noteworthy
campus lecture series and events. Licensure candidates participate
with principals and other professionals in sessions led by renowned
authors and experts.
