Study of French and of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages is an enriching and complementary part of the overall experience of a liberal arts education that fosters students’ appreciation of another culture and also deepens, by comparison and contrast, their understanding of their own language and culture. In addition to strengthening global awareness and multi-cultural sensitivity, the courses taught in the Department emphasize the critical thinking and analytical skills essential to a broad academic formation. Language study is also intellectually rewarding as it challenges thought patterns and helps students become stronger writers and more articulate speakers in both English and foreign languages.

The Department of Modern Languages has created its own Study Abroad programs in France and in Costa Rica.

The French and Spanish programs of the Department of Modern Languages are designed to meet the following objectives:

1) prepare students, in combination with other disciplines, for careers in the arts, business, industry, science, education and the public sector in which knowledge of a foreign language and culture is a distinct advantage;
2) prepare students for graduate study in foreign languages, literatures and related fields;
3) provide the opportunity for students to make connections
