Music is interwoven into the fabric of life at
Millsaps. The Millsaps Singers is the oldest music performance organization
at the College. Repertoire classes, honors recitals, solo recitals,
choir and ensemble performances and master classes with visiting
professionals and artists-in-residence are standard features of
the program. Concentrations in church music and music performance
(piano, voice, organ, guitar, or orchestral instruments) can be
combined not just with a music major, but with any major Millsaps
offers.
Millsaps Singers
The oldest music performance organization at the
college is The Millsaps Singers. Membership in The Singers is open
to all students by audition. Each year, this 70-voice choir performs
a variety of accompanied and a cappella music for the college and
community, and there is usually at least one performance with a
professional orchestra. The Singers traditionally perform a fall
concert, a Christmas concert, and a spring concert, showcasing a
highly diverse repertoire -- masterworks, international and ethnic
works, and recent additions to the choral repertory. Academic credit
is awarded for participation each semester. Singers also takes international
tours-they went to England in 2003.
The highly selective membership of the 16-24 voice
Chamber Singers is drawn from the Millsaps Singers and each member
of the group receives a scholarship for their service. Their repertoire
centers on important sacred literature -- both a capella and accompanied.
In addition to concerts for United Methodist congregations in Mississippi,
the choir takes annual national or international tours. Destination
cities have included Chicago, Washington D.C., San Antonio, and
Orlando. Past concert itineraries have featured international tours
to Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria. Most recently, the
Singers toured Spain and Portugal in May 2002.
