JACKSON – Ranked No. 19 in the Atlantic
South Region, the Millsaps women's tennis team knocked off Louisiana
College and Marion Military Institute CC in their home-opener on
Friday afternoon at Coach Montgomery Courts to move to 2-0 on the
early season.
The sophomore duo of Allison Zakaras
and Beth Fossen had little trouble at No. 1 doubles to give the
Majors an early lead, defeating the pair of K. Denton/Muzumbe
8-1 before a win for Millsaps at No. 3 doubles
for a 2-0 lead.
LC's lone point of the match came at No. 2 doubles when the pair
of Highfill/Broussard won a tight-match, 9-8, over Mary Kate
Rees/Beth Sadler of Millsaps.
Zakaras, ranked No. 36 regionally,
knocked off Denton, 6-1, 6-0, to pace the Majors in singles action
where Millsaps won all six matches. Fossen won in straight-sets
as well at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, followed
by wins at No's 3-6 for the 8-1 season-opening victory.
In the nightcap against Marion Military
Institute, Millsaps surrendered just six points in both singles
and doubles play to cruise to a 9-0 win.
The freshman duo of Mimi Nguyen and Hayley Nemeth blanked the
pair of Veronica Wolf/Yury Pieczynski, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles
to improve their dual match record to 1-1, while No's 1 and 2
doubles rolled.
In singles play, Millsaps dropped
just five points with straight-set wins at No's 3-5.
The Majors will continue an 8-game
stretch on Sunday against Birmingham-Southern College at 8 a.m.
Saturday's matches against Belhaven and Austin College have been
cancelled due to rain. |
