Burns Set to Begin Second Stint as Head Volleyball Coach
Ole Miss graduate will begin fourth season overall as a collegiate coach

July 21, 2008

JACKSON – Dr. Brit Katz, vice president of student life at Millsaps College, announced today the hiring of former head volleyball coach Jaime Burns. The Denver, Colo., native will begin her second stint as the Majors head coach after a 3-year hiatus from the program.

She will officially begin her tenure on August 1, 2008.

Millsaps went 17-25 overall and 6-9 (t-seventh) in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference a year ago under the departed Matt Linebarger who resigned to take an assistant head coach position at Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, Ga.

Burns spent one season away from volleyball in 2007, moving from Missouri back to Mississippi where she worked for the Department of Education.

Prior to working with the DOE, Burns spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State where her main responsibilities included serving as the recruiting coordinator, working with the teams outside hitters and team defense. The Redhawks finished fourth in league play in 2005 and lost in the conference semi's before finishing second in league play in 2006 and advancing to the conference finals.

In her first season with Millsaps in 2004, Burns helped turn around a program that posted an 11-20 record in 2003 into a team that went 20-11 and finished tied for fifth in the highly-competitive SCAC. She was the runner-up for SCAC Coach of the Year honors.

As an athlete, Burns was a four-year starter at outside hitter for Ole Miss from 1999-2003. Burns led the Rebels in kills and digs in her last two seasons. She was voted as team captain as a senior by her teammates. Burns was also a Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Academic Team honoree in seven of her eight semesters at Ole Miss.

She received her undergraduate degree in elementary education with a concentration in English and math in 2002 and her masters in higher education and student personnel at Ole Miss in 2004. Burns served as a volunteer assistant coach for one season after graduation.

A native of Denver, Colo., Burns is the daughter of Fred and Lynne Burns. She has an older sister, Michelle and younger brother, Jack and currently resides in Jackson.
