NEW
ORLEANS, La. – After
two weeks of delays by Hurricane Gustav, the Loyola volleyball
team finally opened its 2008 season, doing so in rousing fashion
with a 3-1 win over NCAA D-III Millsaps
Tuesday night at The Den.
"We couldn't
get anything going tonight," Millsaps head coach Jaime Burns
said. "Being our first true road game of the season, I just don't
think we were mentally prepared. We have two big rivalry matches
this weekend that will hopefully get us back on track."
Loyola won
the opening set 25-20 and fell in the second set 22-25 before
winning the final two in impressive fashion, 25-15 and 25-11.
Mary Seals
led the host Wolfpack with 21 kills, while Gina Gill added
13 kills in the victory. Sarah Howard picked up 36 assists in
addition to a team-high five aces
and four blocks.
Defensively, Keelyn Henderson tallied 16 digs in the contest while
Amanda Oldani kept 13 Major attacks from hitting the court.
The
Majors (5-4) were led by sophomore Kate
Hall’s 12 kills
in the match, whereas Hailey
Miranda had 22 assists. Junior
Dixie Krauss finished
the night as the defensive leader for Millsaps with 16 digs.
Millsaps will
continue a tough stretch of games over the next two weeks, facing
off with Paul Quinn University in the Hangar Dome on Friday,
Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. From there, the Majors will play 11-straight
matches on the road beginning on Saturday the 13th.
