Director of Counseling & Wellness Services

Millsaps College, an academically competitive liberal arts college in Jackson, MS, is accepting applications for the position of Director of Counseling and Wellness Services. The director serves a largely residential campus of approximately 1150 undergraduate students as a valued component of the Division of Student Life and will report to the Vice President and Dean of Students. We are seeking a dynamic, creative, experienced mental health professional to provide emotional and academic support to our students in a holistic manner. Responsibilities to students and the community will include: individual counseling, workshops and psycho educative programs, training activities with various student constituents, cooperative activities and programs with other Student Life staff, informed referrals off-campus, and emergency support.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Master’s, but preferably Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D. in Counseling, Psychology or a related field
  • Must be licensed or license-eligible in Mississippi
  • Must have some administrative experience overseeing budgets and establishing protocols
  • Must have at least three year’s experience, and strong preference will be given to those with college counseling center experience
  • Knowledge of student development theory and practice and expertise in brief therapy
  • Ability to establish balance and maintain perspective
  • Experience with risk management assessment
  • An open-minded, respectful attitude toward diverse cultures and viewpoints

Desired Qualifications:

  • An interest in a holistic approach to health and in working on a small campus were there is more contact with faculty, staff, and students in more settings
  • Experience in working with gender issues, substance abuse, eating disorders, and/or sexual assault/trauma recovery
  • Some experience with alcohol education/treatment and issues related to preventing and treating sexual/relationship violence
  • Interest and experience in basic computer technology – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic study skills and how to help students improve study habits

The director’s position is a 12-month position available after August 8, 2008. The salary is competitive and is accompanied by a College benefit package. Millsaps College is an equal opportunity employer.
