Early bird season tickets are now on sale for the 2010-2011 Arts & Lecture Series at Millsaps College. The series, which will open on Sept. 14 with an appearance by artist H.C. Porter and photojournalist David Rae Morris, includes eight programs.
"H.C. Porter and David Rae Morris, son of the late Willie Morris, will speak about how Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 impacted their artwork and photography and reflect on the recovery of the Mississippi Gulf Coast five years later," said Nola Gibson, executive director of the series. "Our 2010-2011 season will also celebrate southern songwriters, politics and food and delve into the virtues of traditional media and new media. Our goal is to enlighten and entertain."
Residents from throughout the metro area who are officers of the Arts & Lecture Series and serve on the series' advisory board and board of directors play a key role in helping determine programs for the season, Gibson said. "We are one of the oldest organizations of this type in the Jackson area," she said.
Season tickets purchased before September 14 are $40 each for senior citizens age 60 and older; $55 each for members; and $100 for sponsors, which includes two tickets. Season tickets purchased after September 14, are $45 each for senior citizens age 60 and older; $60 each for members; and $125 for sponsors, which includes two tickets. The series will mark its 43rd year with programs that will include songwriters Will Kimbrough, David Womack and Eric Stracener; political analysts Jere Nash and Andy Taggart; and authors Alex Heard and Stokes McMillan. The series will also include programs with Southern Foodways Alliance Oral Historian Amy Evans Streets, the piano duo Quattro Mani; authors Alan Lange, Tom Dawson and Curtis Wilkie; and chef Martha Hall Foose.
