For Millsaps College student Chelsea Rick, the 2010 Miss Mississippi Pageant truly lived up to its name as a scholarship pageant.
Rick competed as Miss Alcorn County in the 2010 pageant and received the $2,500 Women In Medicine Award and a $2,000 scholarship as a semi-finalist. The Women In Medicine Award is given to the contestant with the highest grade point average who has completed at least 50 semester hours in pre-medical courses.
"The Women In Medicine Award was what I was hoping for," said Rick, a junior majoring in biochemistry with a pre-medical concentration.
Rick said the Women in Medicine Award boosted her scholarship dollars and meant she received more money in scholarships than some contestants who were in the Top Five contestants. "I got the fourth highest amount of scholarship money," said Rick, a Top 10 finalist in the 2010 pageant and also in the 2009 pageant.
Rick plans to be a physician and specialize in either rheumatology or gerontology.
"Through the Faith & Work Initiative at Millsaps, I was able to work with a gerontologist, and I really enjoyed it," she said. "I enjoyed seeing how the doctor I worked with was driven by compassion for her patients."
Rick is president of the Student Council for College Advancement. "We do our best to build connections between the student body and alumni," she said.
She is a member of Chi Omega sorority and has worked as a presidential ambassador for the Millsaps Admissions Department.
Rick, who is from Fulton, said she chose to attend Millsaps because she wanted a small, liberal arts college where she could learn to think. Her brother, Trey Rick, is a 2006 graduate of Millsaps.
"I felt at home when I visited," she said. "I felt like everyone I spoke with cared about what happened to me and that I could really grow at Millsaps."
