Millsaps College Offers Summer 2010 Enrichment Classes

 

Looking for enriching summer activities for students in grades 1-12? Millsaps College has scheduled 12 different classes ranging from acting to cheer dance basics. For more information, phone the Office of Continuing Education at 601-974-1130.

 

Classes offered include:

Cheer Dance Basics
A one-week camp for children ages 7-15 that will teach the fundamentals of cheerleading and pom squad dance. This camp is for beginners and also for recreational and school cheerleaders interested in jazz and hip hop dance techniques. The camp is scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon June 21-25. Cost is $85. Deadline to register is June 7.

Birding Camp
A one-week camp for children ages 8-14, where children will learn to identify birds by sight and sound and to attract them to their backyards. Terri Jacobson and bird experts from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Jackson Audubon Society and Wild Birds Unlimited will lead the camp. The camp is scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon June 21-25. Cost is $90. Deadline to register is June 7.

Science Fair 101
A two-week camp where students in grades three through seven will have located articles, written a brief report and be able to state clearly the purpose, problem, hypothesis and procedure of their own science project. The camp is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. June 21 through July 2. Cost is $300. Deadline to register is June 7.

Class Act: Acting Intensive
A three-day experience for youngsters ages 9-12 that will include scene work for camera and stage, improvisation and scene creation, auditioning and even work on playwriting and developing monologue pieces. The workshop will meet from 9 a.m. until noon June 7-9. Cost is $85.

Discovering the Young Artist
Two sessions of art camp for elementary and middle school students. Session I is for grades one through four and is scheduled from 9-10:30 a.m. June 14-18, and Session 2 is for grades five through eight and is scheduled from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. June 21-25. May 31 is the deadline to register for Session I, and June 7 is the deadline to register for Session II. Cost is $95 per session.
 
Be A Nature Detective
A class for youngsters ages 10-14. Students will get close and personal with worms, insects, seashells, bird feathers, flowers and more. They will study nature up close using a jeweler's loupe and The Private Eye® program. The class will meet from 9 a.m. until noon June 6-9. Deadline to register is June 21. Cost is $85.

Money Matters
A two-week camp that will teach children in grades four through seven the fundamentals of earning and managing money. The camp is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. June 7-18. Deadline to register is May 24. Cost is $300.

Character Animation Workshop
A three-day workshop for youngsters ages 10-17. Students will learn about character design, developing a storyboard, forming a soundtrack and basic movements that bring to life cartoon creation. Session I for students ages 10-13 is scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon June 22-24 at Jackson Academy, and Session II for students ages 14-17 is scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon June 29 through July 1 at Jackson Academy. Deadline to register for Session I is June 7, and deadline to register for Session II is June 14. Cost is $80.

Summer Guitar Workshop
Instruction for beginners ages 13-17. The workshop will teach basic note reading, how to strum chords and other acoustic guitar fundamentals. Students will learn how to play songs in both solo and group settings. The class will meet from 10-11:30 a.m. June 14-18. Deadline to register is June 1. Cost is $85.
 
Digital Photography
A four-day workshop that will teach students in grades nine through 12 how to take the best possible picture from start-to-finish. Each student will need a digital camera. The workshop will meet from 10 a.m. until noon June 14-17. Deadline to register is May 31. Cost is $100.

Chamber Music Day Camp
For string, piano and voice students in grades 7-12. The camp is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. July 5-9. Cost is $250. Deadline to register is June 21. Contact Rachel Heard (heardr@millsaps.edu or 601-974-1420) about admission requirements for this camp.

Creative Writing
A two-week workshop for students in grades nine through 12. The workshop will meet from 10 a.m. until noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday from June 21-July 7. Deadline to register is June 7. Cost is $135.

All About Algebra
A class for students in grades 10-12 to help them brush up on algebra skills. The class will meet from 10 a.m. until noon June 7-11. Deadline to register is Monday 24. Cost is $100.
