Have Fun and Learn Something New in an Enrichment Class

Registration is underway for the 39th year of Millsaps College Enrichment Classes. More than 60 classes are being offered for the fall term, all of which cater to a variety of special interests. Enrichment classes are noncredit and are open to anyone age 16 and older.

Millsaps senior Claire Sojourner took a kickboxing class last semester and became a kickboxing fanatic.

"It was definitely a worthwhile experience," she said. "I learned so much during my semester about physical fitness and how to defend myself."

Several new classes are being offered this term. For those wanting to use their green thumb, local landscape architect Rick Griffin is teaching an eight-week course on frugal landscaping. The class is designed to help students save money in their yard by using recycled and cost-effective materials.

Debi Lewis, founder of Joyflow Yoga studio in Ridgeland, is teaching a one-time class on Oct. 15 on yoga and enneagram. Enneagrams are personality maps, and Lewis pairs certain yoga practices with each enneagram so that one can achieve the maximum benefit of their yoga practice.

Many new jewelry making classes are being offered as well. These include fringe bracelet making, creating fine silver jewelry with precious metal clay and Kumihimo, a Japanese method of bracelet making.

The most popular enrichment classes such as bellydancing, beginning photography, tai chi, creative writing, how to build a website, zumba and ballroom dancing, are still being offered, said Dr. Nola Gibson, director of Continuing Education.
