Charles Pickering and Mike Moore “A Look Back, A Look Forward”
Two Mississippians, both attorneys and public servants, take a look at the November statewide elections and put forward their own interpretations of what happened and what it means. They will also look ahead to the national election cycle of 2008. Former Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore (1988-2004) filed the first lawsuit against 13 tobacco companies in 1994. Judge Charles Pickering has been Prosecuting Attorney for Laurel and Jones Counties, and was elected to two terms in the Mississippi State Senate. He served as a U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of Mississippi from 1990-2004. On January 16, 2004, Judge Pickering was given a recess appointment to the United State Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit by President Bush. In December of 2004, he retired from the federal bench to private practice, and is the author of 2006’s Supreme Chaos and 2007’s A Price Too High.

William Jeanes “Long Gone and Long Forgotten: Mississippi’s Airmen of the First World War”
The saga of the Mississippians who took to the air in the early days of aerial combat has long since faded into the mists of history. In 1917 and 1918, high above the Western Front, these airmen flew, fought, killed, and died in machines that would appall modern aviators. Their combat careers were brief, but should not be forgotten. For one evening, William Jeanes brings these airmen to life, introducing new generations to these sadly unknown young Mississippians who flew in France nine decades ago. A native of Corinth, Mississippi, William Jeanes was a Navy Lieutenant, served as editor-in-chief of Car and Driver and two other national magazines, and was a senior vice president at two major advertising agencies. A member of the Millsaps College Board of Trustees, he was the College’s Alumnus of the Year in 1994. Now a resident of Madison, he continues to write professionally.

Southern Songwriters
We continue our salute to those talented Southerners in all the creative forms of music, writing, producing, and performing. Jackson native Neilson Hubbard started writing songs in 1992 while at Ole Miss. He moved to Nashville, and in 2005 his group Strays Don’t Sleep brought out a self-titled release to great reviews. He currently has a new solo album, I Love Your Muscles. Garrison Starr started her musical journey in Memphis. After seven years in Los Angeles, she now lives in Nashville, where she released her new Vanguard CD The Sound of You and Me. Violinist and Mississippi native Molly Thomas showcases her playing, compelling voice, and stage presence in her solo album Shoot the Sky, a very personal look at her life.
