Subscriptions Now Available for Bell Piano Series

(8/23/07)

Season tickets for Millsaps College’s acclaimed Bell Piano Series are now available for the 2007-2008 season. Season tickets, which include all four concerts, are $55 for adults or $15 for students. Concerts are slated for 7:30 p.m. performance times on Fridays September 21, October 5, February 8 and February 29. To order by phone with credit card, or to request more information, call the Performing Arts office at 601-974-1422.

The series will open on September 21 with jazz pianist Stanley Cowell, who has established his legendary reputation as a versatile and sensitive pianist/composer. Alon Goldstein, whose artistic vision, innovative programming, and sensitive and insightful interpretations have brought him to the forefront of his generation, will perform October 5. Anton Nel, who in a three-year period was a prizewinner at the Leeds International Piano Competition, the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition and the Naumburg International Piano Competition, will present a performance February 8. The final concert of the season, on February 29, will be this year’s winner of the prestigious Wideman Piano Competition, held annually in Shreveport, La.

All performances will be at 7:30 p.m. in the recital hall on the second floor of the Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex at Millsaps College. Pre-concert talks by Millsaps music faculty member Dr. Lynn Raley will take place at 6:15 p.m. in room 215, close to the recital hall. Tickets for individual concerts are priced at $15 general admission and $5 for students, and will be sold at the door prior to each performance. Covered parking is available from the Park Avenue entrance off State Street.

The Bell Piano Series is named for Estelle Bell—grandmother of former Millsaps Trustee John Palmer—for fostering an early love of music in young children. During his tenure on the College Board of Trustees, Palmer established the Jonathan M. Sweat Music Endowment, which helped launch the first two seasons of the Bell Piano Series. The legacy continues with another impressive season of piano performances.
