(August 14, 2002)

Musicians and educators at Millsaps are planning an event-packed music conference featuring women composers and accomplished artists for this fall.

The conference, titled "Voices of Women in the Arts," will take place Oct. 10-12 on the Jackson campus. Participating artists include local musicians as well as renowned composers and performers from across the nation.

"Regional and local performers will present varied programming of music by women composers," said Dr. Cheryl Coker, Assistant Professor of Music at Millsaps and one of the organizers of the conference. "The performers all bring to their craft a dedication to achieve the highest level performance possible."

The slate of activities will include concerts, workshops, panel discussions and forums, as well as receptions and luncheon events that will give attendees an opportunity for further discussion with featured artists. Featured performers will include the Mississippi Girlchoir, the Millsaps Singers, flutist Julie Maisel, pianist Elizabeth Moak, violinist Song Xie, flutist Sybil Cheesman and vocalists Lester Senter and Nash Noble. Composers in attendance include Judith Lang Zaimont and Augusta Read Thomas.

In addition, the conference will feature a performance by pianist Stanislav Ioudenitch, a 2001 Gold Meal Winner in the Van Cliburn Piano Competition. Ioudenitch's concert will be sponsored by the Thalia Mara International Arts Foundation.

"Augusta Read Thomas and Judith Lang Zaimont are both internationally recognized in the world of musical composition," added Coker. "They will talk about their music and be available for questions and discussion. This conference provides an excellent hands-on learning opportunity."

"We here in Mississippi will have the opportunity to listen to and reflect on the works and thoughts of two great American women composers as they depict musically the twenty-first century," said Dr. Lester Senter, mezzo soprano and one of the organizers of the conference.

Registration for the three-day conference is $50, and continuing education units are available for participants. For more information on registering for this event, call (601) 974-1422 or email Cheryl Coker. Click here to download the registration form or go online to register.
